A quick Wikipedia search shows that Chichen Itza was one of the largest Maya cities and it was likely to have been one of the mythical great cities, known as Tollans, between the years of 900 - 1200 AD. That area in the Yucatán State is currently federal property, and thus, you can go alone without a tour.

If you're a history junkie, I'd recommend actually going with a tour group as they'll be the most experienced in the history of the area. XICHEN by Xcaret is one of the top two tours (fluctuating between rank one and two) of Chichen Itza, runs between Monday to Saturday, and is approximately 12 hours long. While being so long of a tour, it includes a light breakfast on the bus (which as two bathrooms on it), an all you can eat buffet stop of regional specialties, and multiple stops throughout the day. You'll visit places like The Zaci Maya cenote, Town of Valladolid, and more importantly, Cichen Itza.
